Test Principle Artificial weathering of coatings orexposure of coatings to filtered xenon-arc radiation is carried out in order toobtain the degree of change in a selected property after a certain radiantexposure H, and/or the radiant exposure which is required to produce a certaindegree of ageing. The properties selected for monitoring should preferably bethose which are important for the practical use of the coatings. The propertiesof the coatingsexposed are compared which those of unexposed coating preparedfrom the samecoating materials at the same time and in the same way (controlspecimens)or with those of coatings exposed at the same time whose behaviorduring testing in exposure apparatus is already known (reference specimens). XenonLamp lightcan emulate the effect of sunshine,while water spray system canemulate the effects of rain and dew. During the test, radiation energy andtemperature are controllable. B-SUN can subject test specimens to the equivalent ofnoon summer sunlight for 24 hours a day, every day. Consequently, specimendegradation can be highly accelerated. For B-SUN, there are three opticaldifferent filters used to get different spectra for variousapplications. ① Daylight Filters:used to simulate noon summer directsunlight, they can offer the best correlation to the natural exposures for mostfact applications. Materials which are typically used outdoors like exteriorcoatings or outdoor rubbers should be tested using Daylight Filters. This testis called as “Artificial Weathering Test” ② Window Glass Filter:Using 3mm thickness window glass toproduce spectra equivalent to sunlight coming through normal window glass. Thisspectrum can also simulate some indoor lighting such as the harsh lightingfound in a typical commercial or office environment. They are used for indoormaterials such as printing materials or textiles. This test is called as“Exposureto artificial radiation Test” ③ Extended UVfilters:These filters allow excess UV, below the normal cut-on ofnatural sunlight, used to simulate sunlight which doesn’t come throughatmosphere .They are used to produce faster or more severe test results.
