Conductivity paint meter to test sprayability of wet paint Model: 76652-03 76652-03 Ransburg Paint Resistivity Meter (includes 76634-00 Multi-Function Meter and 7922-00 Paint Probe Assembly)
Technical Data Units: MΩ and kΩ
Features: This meter has two (2) scales, MΩ and kΩ that may be used for the measurement of the paint resistance. Once the resistance of the paint is determined and found to spray successfully, measuring resistivity with this meter provides a way to duplicate conditions. This is also important when troubleshooting problems with spray or rotational applicators.
NOTE: 7922-00 Paint Probe Assembly is not available separately
Application Testing and the measurement of the electrical resistance of paint formulations
What is wet resistivity in paint? And why is paint resistivity important? Paint resistivity is the most important factor to determine whether the paint formulation is suitable for the electrostatic painting process. By definition, paint resistivity is the degree to which the coating material resists the flow of current. Coating materials with a high paint resistivity may work poorly. They can usually be reformulated to make them suitable. This does not mean that the resistivity should be as low as possible. As a rule of thumb, a resistivity of 20 to 140 MΩ-CM is suitable for most kinds of electrostatic equipment. The Ransburg paint resistivity meter measures the resistivity in megaohm (MΩ). To obtain MΩ-CM, as needed for the ASTM D5628 standard, the MΩ reading from the meter must be multiplied by 132 (MΩ-CM = MΩ reading x 132).
Also important: When high voltage is applied, the properties of some coating materials may change (for example metal flakes and coatings with metallic content), i.e. when measured they feature high resistivity, but have actually low resistivity when applied under high voltage.
